SOC Insight: Akira Ransomware and the Cost of Coverage Gaps
Just days after Cyflare’s SOC issued an advisory on Akira ransomware and its exploitation of SonicWall VPN vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-40766), one of our customers was targeted — a real-time example of how quickly emerging threats become active campaigns.
The organization had both managed XDR and EDR, but not every endpoint had an active agent. MFA wasn’t enforced on a shared administrative account.
Attackers gained access through compromised credentials, moved laterally via RDP, exfiltrated data, and deployed ransomware across unmanaged systems. Managed systems under Cyflare’s watch were contained immediately.
